The District's Teacher of the Year Torie Calderone was recognized today @LaPerche and will be recognized tonight at the School Committee meeting. Congratulations!

It may not look like much right now but this bench, constructed by our SHS students is one of 5 that will be dedicated to each school as "Buddy Benches" to promote inclusivity & community. Each school will paint their own. Dedication is open to the public Sat., 5/20 @PVES

The Color Run was a huge success with many families joining in on this beautiful day at Deerfield Park. Thank you to SSELAC for developing & hosting this event to gain awareness of special needs & to promote inclusivity! Thrilled to join our students & families @SmithfieldSchls

On May 4, LaPerche hosted Zero Waste day. Our goal was to reduce the amount of food in our compost, as well as what was headed to the landfill. The average Rhode Island student wastes 45 pounds of food a year. By implementing our Cafeteria Ranger program, LaPerche students had reduced their waste to 31.6 pounds per person. Our goal was to reduce that to 23 pounds of food per person. Zero Waste day was a huge success! Many more students drank all of their milk and ate all of their food. If we continue at this rate every day, the amount of waste would be reduced to 14 pounds per person! Let's do this!

LaPerche has been piloting an SEL program called Everyday Speech. Mrs. Dorsey has been team teaching weekly lessons with the first grade teachers. This week they reviewed six strategies they might use when they are feeling frustrated, sad, angry, too excited or any other emotion that gets in the way of their learning. The strategies included take a break, different types of breathing, getting outside, doing yoga, and more. Students chose strategies that would work for them and added them to their toolbox. First graders use their personal toolbox to help them reset and feel ready to learn.

Today we had endless volunteers who joined us for lunch and recess. This allowed teachers and staff to enjoy an uninterrupted catered lunch together. Thank you to the LaPerche PTA for the delicious meal and to all of our volunteers for their time. #teacherandstaffappreciationweek

Teacher and staff appreciation week has been amazing at LaPerche. Thank you to all of the families who sent in flowers for make your own bouquet day. The school building smelled amazing and the place looked beautiful.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all our faculty @SmithfieldSchls. Thank you for all you do!

Happy Administrative Assistants' Day
To those who work behind the scenes as part of our Smithfield Public Schools Team, Thank You! @SmithfieldSchls

First graders at LaPerche are completing a unit on graphing. They chose a question and came up with three possible answers, and then surveyed the class. They took the results and created their own bar graphs. First graders can make and read bar graphs!

Wonderful musical concerts at our elementary schools last night during Teaching & Learning Night. Great job to all of our students, K-5, and to teachers Jenn Shafer & Sandy Barrette. @SmithfieldSchls

We are ready for tonight's Teaching and Learning Night at our elementary schools. @SmithfieldSchls

Today third-grade students at LaPerche created a circuit with a battery, LED light, and aluminum foil before experimenting with a Makey-Makey. Makey-Makeys are circuits allowing students to turn paper clips or any conductor into tools to play the piano on the Makey-Makey app! The students practice critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity throughout our computer science lessons. All crucial skills needed to succeed in the 21st century! Way to go, third grade. Keep creating and stay curious!

Teaching & Learning Night is being celebrated at each of the elementary schools Wed. night @SmithfieldSchls

These 5th graders are highly competitive when it comes to math. Math Madness & the Math Olympiad came to the elementary schools through District Math Coordinator Wendy Phillips. @SmithfieldSchls @SmithfieldSuper

We are investing in interactive technologies to promote a K-12 continuum of computer science skills. These first graders are developing codes. Our elementary & middle schools are part of our "3 to CTE" initiative @SmithfldSchls.

March Madness - Smithfield PD v. Smithfield Fire BBall Game @SHS Friday @ 7 p.m. Please support this fun event benefitting town residents. Thank you.

Recognizing students who go above & beyond to help create an inclusive community. Thank you Elijah & Julia @SHSSentinels @SmithfieldSchols. "Catching kids" doing great work for others. #community #students #unsungheroes

In first grade at LaPerche today, we had an amazing social skills lesson from Everyday Speech about using positive self talk. Positive self talk means telling ourselves positive or happy messages to give us confidence to get through hard times. This helps us grow into a positive mindset. Today the first graders created moves to go with their positive self talk. They said things such as I am a hard worker! I can be myself! I've got this! I believe in myself! Let's all try positive self talk to reset the negative thoughts in our brains!

In kindergarten, writing instruction includes direct instruction. The teacher provides instruction about what type of letter begins the sentence, using a finger space between words, tapping out unknown words, using lowercase instead of uppercase letters throughout the sentence, and adding something at the end of end of the sentence (the periods!) Kindergarten students used their tools, including their vocabulary journal to determine how to spell the word instrument and reminded each other about all of the important parts of writing. Kindergarten students are hard workers!
