Lt. Carberry and the Smithfield firefighters visited LaPerche today. The students learned so many important tips including checking your smoke detectors date and batteries, to never hide during a fire, to get as close to the ground as possible to avoid any smoke, and to stop, drop and roll if your clothes catch on fire. The students showed how they would get close to the ground if there was smoke in the room where they were.
The LaPerche students asked so many insightful questions and wanted to know how a firefighter searches a room when there is a lot of smoke. Firefighter Mike demonstrated how a firefighter feels the wall with one hand while using their leg to sweep the room. So interesting!
The students headed outside to check out the fire engine and to visit with Sparky! Thank you Smithfield firefighters!!

During morning meeting, kindergarten students at LaPerche think about and then share the name of their favorite treat. We learned that some friends love Reeses peanut butter cups, while others like noodles, skittles, and lollipops. During sharing time, students learn to wait their turn, speak to the whole group in a loud voice, and form their thoughts into complete sentences. Kindergarten is a fun place to learn!

LaPerche fifth graders were thrilled to take part in the Rhode to Bicycle Safety program put on by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT). The program teaches elementary school-age children valuable skills for safe bike riding. The fifth graders learned so much about how to properly wear a helmet, ride safely on the street using hand signals, and the rules of the road. The kids road all over the LaPerche parking lots practicing . Next up, head out to the bike path with their family!

Third grade is famously known as the year students learn their multiplication facts. Students may not know that they have been learning a multiplication strategy since kindergarten, skip counting. To celebrate the thirty-third day of school, the students practiced skip counting by 3s to the tune of "Jingle Bells." At 33 minutes past every hour, students stopped to incorporate kinesthetic movements such as squats, burpees, high kicks, and claps while singing the jingle.

ELA centers in kindergarten were full of engaged learners today. Students practiced sight words, letter formation, and matching letters with their sounds. The kids strengthened their hand muscles while cutting pictures and sorted the pictures and determined which had the short a sound. All of this practice helps kids learn how to read! What a great day in kindergarten!

Join us on October 25th at 7 PM for the FREE fall concert at SHS featuring the chorus, band, Sentinel Singers, and soloists. Our students have been hard at work developing exciting lighting changes for each number. At about an hour run time, it will be family friendly too!

ReadyGEN, our ELA curriculum, has third-grade students examine the literal and nonliteral meanings of words in literary texts. The third grade at LaPerche celebrated their learning of "idioms" with a parade. See if you can find one tough cookie, cute as a button, who let the cat out of the bag, two peas in a pod and hold your horses! LaPerche teachers know how to bring learning to life!

It’s writing time in kindergarten at LaPerche. Mrs. Friel’s class is reading Life in a Pond. She modeled how to draw a pond and included all of the parts that the students shared and learned about during reading. Then, the students had time to draw their own pond with all of the important parts. Next, Mrs. Friel did a lesson on labeling, and hearing all of the sounds that are in words. She labeled her pond and the students labeled their own. Beginning writers think, draw, and then label. Next up is sentences!

So many of our teachers, like Ms. Aceto, demonstrate each day how much they care for our students. Students in this 2nd grade class decide on the type of greeting they want each morning - high 5, "scary monster," hug. Creating strong classroom communities @SmithfieldSchls

The October student council created and shared their morning affirmations. They taught the movements to the students and state them with the students each morning.
Affirmations are positive statements we say to ourselves to challenge unhelpful or negative thoughts. Ask your K-5 student to show you the moves!
I am a problem solver.
I stick with things and don’t give up.
I am helpful and kind.
I strive to do my best.
I am enough.

LaPerche students enjoyed a mood boost today with Chef Reese from Chartwells. The kids were challenged to guess the five ingredients in a mystery food. LaPerche students are always so adventurous and without seeing the food, were ready for the challenge. They quickly realized the smell and taste were familiar and worked at their table to determine the five ingredients. Apples (from Steere Orchard), cinnamon, salt, brown sugar and the one ingredient that stumped them, lemon! Thank you, Chef Reece!

Congratulations to SHS art teacher, Kristine Straus, who has been selected as the 2023 RI Art Education Association High School Teacher of the Year!

In preschool this morning, the weather reporter went to the window to check what was happening outside. He came back to the group and shared “rainy”. Mrs. Grieco helped him form a complete sentence and report out to the group that the weather outside was rainy today. LaPerche teachers have high expectations in all areas including public speaking and students rise to meet, and often exceed, them.

In second grade at LaPerche today, partners worked together to determine the main idea of the text they were reading. Then, they reread the text to find the key details that supported the main idea. Second graders know how to work together and give everyone an opportunity to share their thinking.

October is National Principals Month. Principals have a direct impact on student achievement & school climate. Thank you to all of our Principals @SmithfieldSchls

Wear green on Friday in support of Unified Day recognizing and celebrating the inclusion of all of our students in Smithfield Schools! #Movingforwardtogether

Third graders at LaPerche discuss setting, theme and plot for chapter 8 of the Case of the Gasping Garbage. Students learn so much from each other and challenge each other’s thinking during group discussions!

During Start with Hello Week at LaPerche, the third, fourth, and fifth grade students mixed it up at lunch to meet new friends. As students arrived at the lunch room door, they received a card with a number from 1 to 17. That number indicated which table would be their seat for the day. Fifth grade students were seated at the table, ready to lead the discussion so new friendships could be started. Start with Hello Week is a “national call to action week, dedicated to making new social connections and creating a sense of belonging among youth”. It is part of the Sandy Hook promise.

LaPerche fourth and fifth graders worked in the garden with Mrs. Dorsey and Annie Bayer from Revive The Roots. They prepared the beds for fall plantings! They cleared the weeds from summer, composted the beds to feed the soil, applied mulch to insulate the earth, and planted spinach, beets and radishes to harvest this fall!! The kids learned so much and are excited to get back into the garden to taste all that they planted!
